Volunteers Needed for 2026 Season

Dear SCOTIA XC Members,

The club is able to keep membership rates low because our services are provided by volunteers!  This year we need to see some new faces to keep things rolling along smoothly. Here are the volunteer spots we need filled for the upcoming season.  Many of these jobs are behind the scenes work, many of them have a direct impact on introducing new skiers to our sport and all of them give back to the club in a very tangible way!!!

  • ages 4-5 years
  • extensive ski knowledge not required
  • lessons happen at the same time as the older groups who have experienced coaches to lean on
  • data bank of lessons/games ideas provided
  • online coach development required and paid for by CCNS
  • we currently have 1 coaches for this program for the upcoming season and may not be able to offer it

  • We are in a dire position with Youth Coaches this year. Over half of our coaches are unable to recommit this year. PROGRAMMING MAY NOT HAPPEN.
  • CCNS funds training.  Coaches receive free club membership.

  • behind the scenes role, current co-ordinator moving on after this year
  • requires communicating with coaches and families in programs on a weekly basis durning the 8 week lesson block.

  • would love to have more instructors available to provide “pop-up” group lessons when snow is available.
  • could also use another instructor to join our 2 seasoned instructors for the adult Learn to Skate class or to Provide a Classic Class for new skiers.

If you’re interested in coaching – Scotia XC in collaboration with Cross Country Nova Scotia (CCNS) is offering a coaching/instructor course Dec. 6 & 7th, 2025. This hybrid course targets anyone who is interested in instructing adult or youth beginner skiers. The course is designed by Nordiq Canada at the Community Coach level The course provides coaches with the knowledge of how to structure a lesson that creates a meaningful learning experience for novice skiers. The emphasis is on skill development in both techniques; classic & skate. Participants will be instructed on how to deliver a fun & enjoyable interactive session that develops a passion for the lifelong health and fitness benefits of cross-country skiing.

You do not need to be a proficient skier to be able to coach. Your skiing ability is less important than your ability to convey information in a fun, creative, & safe environment. We want beginner skiers to develop a positive attitude towards skiing by experiencing an enjoyable lesson.

When : Dec 6th & 7th 9:00 – 4:30

Where : NSCC campus Leeds Street

Cost : 50.00 which will be reimbursed upon completion of the course

Format :  Theory & Practical ( we will use roller skis provided by the club if no snow) . If you have no roller skiing experience we have several options of creating a safe & valuable experience for you. We will treat it like a beginning ski lesson.

If you have questions/concerns please reach out to   David Hubley davidhubley@icloud.com

  • now that we have our locations all up and running we would love to see the “club” aspect strengthened.
  • looking for volunteers to be on a list to who are willing to “host” a group ski when conditions are favourable.

  • improve our SEO
  • website currently does not appear high/at all in Google searches, behind the scenes work to improve that
  • update website as required

  • looking for someone to carry on the social media presence. Great to have someone who is out and about on various trail systems but certainly not required as members often provide updates/photos that can be communicated.
  • looking for someone to revitalize the newsletter if club members would like to see that return
  • looking for groomers at all of our locations
  • being a groomer does not require a commitment of being available to groom every snow fall.  The more groomers we have the easier the role of groomer becomes.  Training provided.

If you are able to help with any of these roles please reach out and I can provide lots more details.

We are trying to keep our costs low but are certainly headed towards the possibility of some of these roles becoming contract positions which will definitely increase membership rates.

Email us at scotiaxc@gmail.com to let us know how you can help out.
